BIOGRAPHY

Jane Sutherland’s work is distinguished by her wide-ranging subject matter, and her ability to mix observation, deep feeling, and technical execution to produce pictures of compelling realism. However familiar the image, we have the impression of seeing it clearly for the first time.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am drawn to subjects that seem rich in creative challenges for engaging the mind and the eye. For me the process of making a painting mirrors the way we look at something familiar in a new way. In my Degas Dancer series I take the iconic sculpture off her pedestal and invite the viewer to engage with the reproduction of the iconic sculpture in a two-dimensional format as well as engage with the paintings and drawings as works of art in their own right.
